Australia is a huge country, famous for its long hot summers, beaches and unique wildlife. Don’t let the country’s reputation fool you, though – the eight states and territories are home to diverse landscapes, cultures and real estate opportunities. Whether you’re looking for an ultra-modern city apartment, a remote beachfront cottage or acres of rural land, there’s plenty of property to satisfy you in Australia.

New South Wales

As Australia’s most populous state, and home of the nation’s largest city Sydney, NSW is a popular place to live. Almost 8 million people call NSW their home, attracted by the bright lights of the big city, and the diversity of regional centres.

Sydney property remains in hot demand, and Bankwest estimates the time required to save a 20 per cent house deposit in NSW is around 5.3 years.

Victoria

Home to almost 6 million people, Victoria is Australia’s second most populated state. Around 4.5 million people live in the capital city of Melbourne; however, strong population growth has led to predictions the city will overtake Sydney by 2056.

It’s not hard to see why people would be drawn to Melbourne, which has been selected as the most liveable city in the world by The Economist.

Queensland

Running a close third to Victoria in terms of population, Queensland is home to 5.9 million people. There’s plenty of space to house all of those residents, however, as the state has a land expanse seven times the size of Great Britain!

The majority of Queenslanders live in Brisbane, where Bankwest estimates it takes just over four years to save a 20 per cent deposit.

Western Australia

The largest state in all of Australia, WA’s land mass covers one-third of the country, yet it’s only home to around 10 per cent of the population. That luxury of space has attracted much of Australia’s resource industries, which has allowed the development of the capital city Perth, named the world’s eighth most liveable city.

South Australia

Famous for its culture, and world-class food and wine, SA is home to 1.7 million Australians. The capital of Adelaide plays host to wonderful annual festivals, and has a higher ratio of cafes and restaurants to residents than any other Australian city.

Tasmania

Isolated, leafy Tasmania is Australia’s most affordable state to buy a home, with the average time to save a 20 per cent deposit just 2.8 years. For lovers of nature, almost half of Tasmania’s land mass is covered by World Heritage Areas, national parks and reserves.

ACT

The national capital Canberra is home to most of Australia’s major cultural institutions, and has the highest number of new dwelling commencements of anywhere in the country. More and more people are discovering there’s more to the ACT than just politics.

Northern Territory

Australia’s least-populated region, the NT supports a large portion of the nation’s indigenous population. More than 50 social, cultural and religious organisation are active in the state, made up of over 100 nationalities.
